Plans outline bus routes to Wrightsville Beach

 Wrightsville Beach | Public transportation to a public beach seems like a good idea. Implementing that plan is going to take a lot of work. That was what came out of Thursday's Board of Aldermen meeting and a presentation by Albert Eby, director of Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority, better known as Wave Transit. Eby's presentation included three route proposals. The first two would involve no new expenses and would extend routes currently part of a planned comprehensive restructuring. The final proposal, which would come with additional costs, was for a dedicated shuttle that would pick up and drop off at regular intervals at the Galleria shopping center, about a mile west of the drawbridge on Wrightsville Avenue. The third proposal seemed to make the most sense to the board and Mayor Stephen Whalen, but he made it clear that the town wasn't likely to foot any of the bills. "If there's a cost to the town, it probably won't go very far," he said.
Whalen also said he had mixed emotions about the overall proposal. "I think this is a lot more complex than they (Wave Transit) realize," Whalen said. "I'm not sure if they understand what's going on down here in the summer. People have to wait 45 minutes or an hour from Military Cutoff just to get to the beach."
Eby told the board he was aware that the complexities involved with providing public transportation to a beach jammed with summer tourists made the proposal very difficult.
"We're not sure if we fully appreciate what we're facing," Eby said in response to Whalen's comment on the traffic backups that are commonplace from April to September.
Eby said there is public support for bus access to area beaches. He cited a telephone survey commissioned by Wave Transit that asked 1,135 area residents about their thoughts on public transportation. He said 87 percent of respondents support public transportation service to Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach. The board made no decision on the proposals but scheduled a public hearing on the matter for late March or early April. Whalen invited Eby to the public hearing, and encouraged him to think on a small scale as they go forward. "If this is to work at all, we have to look at smaller buses, fewer routes and fewer stops," Whalen said. "There's no way a 36-foot bus is going to fit down here in the summer, and it's going to take a lot longer than 30 minutes a trip."
